In the upper part of Lucignano, the Cassero interrupts the orderly layout of the concentric streets with its massive bulk. It is the most evident reminder of the village's military role, built in a decisive position between the areas of influence of Siena and Arezzo.
From Sienese defense to the town theatre
Erected in the 14th century under Sienese rule, the Cassero retains coats of arms and structures that recall its controlling function. After the Battle of Scannagallo it passed to Florence and gradually lost its military role. Over time it served as a grain storehouse and, in the 19th century, it was also converted into a theatre, becoming part of the village's civic life.
Piazza delle Logge and the heart of Lucignano
Opposite the fortress opens Piazza delle Logge, commissioned in the Medici era. The loggia, the fountain and the surrounding buildings create one of the most harmonious spaces in the village. Stopping here makes it possible to grasp the balance typical of Lucignano: medieval severity and Renaissance grace in the same view.
