The Cassero occupies the highest part of Castiglion Fiorentino, where the village seems to gather around the tower. Reaching it means crossing alleys and squares to a point where the city's history and the landscape of the Valdichiana meet.
The fortress contested between Arezzo, Perugia and Florence
The structure was transformed and reinforced over the centuries by the various powers that vied for Castiglion Fiorentino. Walls, courtyards and passageways preserve the traces of these dominations. In the Cassero area, excavations and museums also tell of the Etruscan and medieval phases of the hill, long before the current tower.
At the top, the valley changes perspective
The climb to the tower is rewarded with a view that embraces the Val di Chio, the plain and the surrounding hills. From above, the streets of the historic center take on order and the village reveals its strategic position. It is a visit to make slowly, leaving a few minutes just for the panorama.
