The Rocca di Civitella rises above the village as an incomplete yet powerful presence. Its broken walls let the sky in, turning the ancient fortification into a place where history is felt even through what is no longer there.
A sentinel on the road between Arezzo and Siena
Civitella's position made the hill strategic since antiquity. The Rocca, of Lombard origin and later expanded, controlled one of the main routes of inland Tuscany. Its structures still show the strength of military architecture, while the Porta Senese and the town walls complete the village's defensive system.
The ruins and the memory of the twentieth century
The destruction suffered during the Second World War left deep scars. Today walking through the Rocca means holding together the Middle Ages and the memory of the 1944 massacre. The panorama is vast, but it does not erase the sense of reflection: rather, it makes more evident the fragility and the capacity of Civitella to be reborn.
