The Reclamation Trail runs straight through the heart of the valley, alongside the Canale Maestro della Chiana. It is a simple and surprising route: as you proceed between fields, bridges and locks, the landscape tells the long story of a land that was once marshy and is today fertile.
The valley seen from its quietest axis
The itinerary connects the Lake of Chiusi with Arezzo over roughly sixty-two kilometres, without demanding gradients. It can be tackled in full or divided into shorter stretches, following the pace of the bicycle, the walk or the horse. Around you run rows of vines, farmsteads and the outlines of villages that seem to float above the hills.
Water, engineering and landscape
The hydraulic works encountered along the way recall that the present beauty of the Valdichiana also springs from centuries of labour and knowledge. The trail does not separate nature and history: it places them side by side. For this reason it suits both those seeking movement and those who want to understand how the valley acquired its present form.
