The Carnival of Foiano della Chiana is a historic event that takes place in an atmosphere of joy and celebration. Its roots go back to 1539, when the Statute of the Community of Foiano established three days of festivities for the Carnival. At that time the celebrations were held indoors and were celebrated with rags (typical sweets of the area) and Vin Santo. Today, after more than four centuries, the Carnival of Foiano continues to amaze and move audiences, reaching its 487th edition in 2026 and earning the prestigious title of the oldest carnival in Italy.
What makes the Carnival of Foiano unique is its extraordinary artistic and social value. The majestic allegorical floats made of papier-mâché by volunteers, some of which reach impressive dimensions, together with the magnificent choreographies of the masquerade, are the result of tireless work that lasts all year round.
These visual spectacles give intense emotions to everyone who takes part in the event. But the beating heart of the Carnival is the four city workshops: Azzurri, Bombolo, Night owls and Rustici. The inhabitants of Foiano dedicate heart and soul to building the allegorical floats, giving life to an exciting competition that culminates on the last Sunday, a day of great importance for the community.
The Carnival of Foiano takes place over five consecutive Sundays, enriched by festivals and events in the various workshops that bring to life Foiano and the Valdichiana for over a month. The dates vary according to Easter.
