Gino Severini. Modernity as Dialogue

The MAEC in Cortona celebrates Gino Severini with more than eighty works and the return to Italy of the monumental “La danse du Pan Pan à Monico”.

Date 05/07/2026 – 01/11/2026
Area Cortona
Location MAEC - Palazzo Casali

A thread connects the European avant-gardes of the twentieth century to Cortona: it is the story of Gino Severini, born here in 1883 and become one of the central figures of modern art. From 5 July to 1 November 2026, that thread returns to its starting point with the international exhibition “Gino Severini. Modernity as Dialogue”.

The exhibition is hosted by the MAEC in Palazzo Casali and marks the sixtieth anniversary of the artist's death. It brings together more than eighty works and reconstructs the relationship between Severini, the avant-gardes, Paris and the land to which he continued to feel bound.

The return of a monumental work

Among the works on display is La danse du Pan Pan à Monico, a four-metre Futurist canvas from the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The work returns to Italy after more than thirty-five years and represents one of the focal points of the itinerary.

Its presence restores the international dimension of Severini and allows visitors to closely observe an artistic season that changed the way movement, the city and modernity were depicted.

The exhibition continues outside the museum

The journey does not end within the halls of the MAEC. The project invites visitors to follow the places of Severini, to walk through Cortona and to recognize in the landscape of the Valdichiana Aretina the bond that accompanied the artist even far from home.

The exhibition thus becomes an opportunity to encounter the work and, at the same time, to read Cortona through the biography of one of its most illustrious citizens.
