The May Festival represents the iconic event of Lucignano, an ode to spring celebrated with allegorical floats decorated with flowers, the fruit of the commitment and creativity of the Lucignano community. Divided into the four districts of Porta Murata, Porta S. Giusto, Porta S. Giovanni and Via dell'Amore, the residents gather to bring this extraordinary festival to life.
The origins of the Maggiolata date back to 1937, when, as a tribute to the agricultural tradition, the carts were loaded with broom flowers, locally called "May", from which the event takes its name. After the Second World War, the Maggiolata took on a new and festive character, with a parade of allegorical floats covered with about 20,000 flowers, including carnations, gerberas and daisies.
The parade is preceded by Capitano d'armi which, together with drummers and trumpeters, announces the start of the event. The carroccio, symbol of the Municipality of Lucignano and pulled by two majestic Chianina cows, closes the procession.
Throughout the year, the districts secretly work to create the flower floats, and the district that presents the most original float, consistent with the chosen theme, is awarded the Golden Griffin. This award, besides rewarding the volunteers' work, stirs intense emotions among the winners, but also a certain bitterness for those who will have to wait until next year to try to win it.
Unmissable is the "Battle of Flowers" which concludes the event on the second Sunday of May. The floats are stripped and the flowers are transformed into contradaioli, creating a wonderful "battle" of colorful petals among the crowd, a joyful way to celebrate the arrival of spring.
